Preparing for Your First IV Therapy Session
Your first IV therapy session should be a positive experience. Here's how to prepare and what to expect.
Before Your Appointment
The Day Before:
- Stay well hydrated (easier IV insertion)
- Get a good night's sleep
- Avoid excessive alcohol
The Morning Of:
- Eat a light meal 1-2 hours before
- Continue drinking water
- Wear comfortable clothes with easy arm access
- Arrive 10-15 minutes early for paperwork
What to Bring
- Photo ID
- List of current medications
- Any relevant medical records
- Something to do during the infusion (book, phone, laptop)
What Happens During Your Visit
- 1. Check-in - Complete intake forms if first visit
- 2. Consultation - Discuss your health history and goals
- 3. Preparation - The nurse prepares your customized IV
- 4. Insertion - A small catheter is placed (quick pinch)
- 5. Infusion - Relax for 30-60 minutes while nutrients flow
- 6. Completion - Catheter removed, bandage applied
- 7. Checkout - Pay and schedule follow-up if desired
During the Infusion
You might experience:
- Cool sensation as fluids enter (normal)
- Slight metallic taste with some vitamins
- Increased need to use restroom
- Relaxation and calm
After Your Session
- You can return to normal activities immediately
- Continue drinking water
- Note how you feel over the next 24-48 hours
- Some people feel energized immediately

Tips for a Great Experience
